The love of anthropology took me to working in the Travel trade and it remains a passion even till today. It was this world of travel that aptly led me to a place where my holistic journey started. It was during a holiday in Mauritius that I came upon Ayurveda and Reiki. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Ayurveda was no other than Kabiraj - the traditional medicine I grew up with in India. In fact my childhood days are filled with the aroma of roasting herbs and spices that came from my neighbour’s house who was a "Kabiraj" (Ayurvedic doctor) who made special herbal ointments to cure persistent skin problems and conditions. Realising the energetic of this medicine, I embarked on a 5 year study that finally saw me receive a Masters degree in Ayurvedic medicine from Middlesex University.

Before doing my Masters I was already practicing a Therapist so was aware how prevalent mental stress conditions were. This was further reiterated in an office environment where I worked as a Manager. These experiences prompted me to take a special interest in the prevention and promotion of mental health issues which prompted me to spend most of my internship time in India dealing with mental and neurological disorders. I fortified my learning experience through a diverse choice of places in North and South India to understand local methods of practicing Ayurveda. I found several ways this could be done and went on to do my research on using Errhine therapy (nasya) for the prevention of Generalised Anxiety Disorder.

I initially used my office going life to investigate problems while employed methods in Ayurveda and Reiki to help resolve them. To keep all this in perspective and in the "real world" I continued to practice part time so to be able to truly apply myself to my practice. My mission now as a full time Practitioner is to get everyone to understand and integrate Ayurveda into their daily life for positive health. I employ simplistic and realistic methods so it is easy to understand and apply. My desire is to “empower” individuals with practical tools to enable them to look after their health. I work with a consolidated programme “Clear, Cleanse, Create” that gives good results. I also do consultations, bespoke Wellness and therapeutic treatments and host several wellbeing workshops from stress management to cooking classes. If you are looking for something different, unique or new then Ayurveda with Ratna is for you.

LET’S TALK ABOUT LIFE – LET’S TALK AYURVEDA

Ayurveda treatments work holistically to prevent illnesses and balance the body, mind and spirit.

Ayurveda comes from Sanskrit words “Ayu” which means life and “Veda” which means wisdom. It is really the “Science of Life”, a holistic system of preventive medicine and health care that was developed in India over 5000 years ago. This alternative and complementary medical system resulted from a combination of herbal medicine, philosophy, daily experiences and scientific observations.

The main focus of this science is balance. It is based on the universal law of balancing the five elements of nature i.e. space, air, fire, water and earth - that are present in the human body as “doshas” or bodily humors namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. It works to co-ordinate the functioning of the body with the same cosmic rules present in the universe. To achieve a balance every person must live according to their innate mind-body constitution or “Prakrti”. A deviation to this state creates imbalance of the dosas which ultimately result in illnesses.

As everyone’s constitutional makeup is different; no two persons are the same. Ayurveda understands everyone is unique therefore works holistically to prevent mental or physical illnesses from developing. It uses physical, psychological and spiritual therapies to remedy an imbalance. It is as holistic as it gets!

Diversity of Ayurveda

There are several aspects to this art of healing that include therapeutic herbs, several types of wellness and curative treatments including massages, diet and nutrition, life-style counselling, healing music, vastu (like feng shui), meditation and yoga - the sister science of Ayurveda.

Dual aspect of Ayurveda

The aim of Ayurveda is twofold, one is to “maintain the health in the healthy” and the other is to “quieten the disorders of the ailing”. It therefore looks to protect the health in the healthy and alleviate disease in the diseased.

Ayurveda Assessment

A typical in dept assessment would include the three Ayurvedic examination processes:
• darshana or direct observation i.e. tongue diagnosis, listening to your voice, looking at the colour of your eyes, nails, hair etc,
• sparsana or touch i.e. pulse diagnosis, checking for the texture of your skin, checking heart rate and blood pressure and finally
• prasana or questioning which can be verbal or in the form of a written questionnaire.

Uniqueness of Ayurveda

“Ayurveda treats the patient not the disease”.
